Skipton
is a small rural town situated on the Glenelg Highway 55 kilometres south-west
of Ballarat in the Western District of Victoria.
We are located on the border of three shires, Corangamite, Golden Plains
and Pyrenees, with some families being located in each of these. The school is
situated in the Corangamite shire.
Students from the township of Skipton and the surrounding areas of Carranballac,
Stoneleigh, Pittong, Wallinduc, Mannibadar, Bradvale, and Mingay attend Skipton
Primary School. Two buses transport the children from outlying districts. The
Carranballac Bus transports 30 children and the Wallinduc Skipton Bus transports
25 children. Approximately half of our school population comes from the
surrounding rural areas and half from within the township area.
The rural areas produce wool, beef and grain. Some parents commute to Ballarat
and further afield for employment and some work locally in businesses such as
the Hospital.
Demographics
Enrolments
have been just over one hundred each year from 2001 with 114 children at the
February census in 2004. We have a higher proportion of males than females in
the ratio of approximately 55:45. Mobility is low.
A teaching staff of 9 (8.6 EFT) and a non-teaching staff of 3 (1.7 EFT)
service the school’s educational program and administrative requirements.
The main feeder kindergarten is Skipton Pre-School; the nearest primary schools
are at Rokewood and Lismore; the secondary destinations are widespread and
include Lake Bolac SC, Beaufort SC, and a range of schools in Ballarat.
