The History of My Town

Radviliskis is in the centre of nothern Lithuania. Radviliskis is mentioned in 1567 for the first time. The origin of Radviliskis name is connected with the Radvilai family. Because at that time this family governed this district of Siauliai. There was Radviliskis too. There were propitious conditions for the development of trades. In 1687 Radviliskis got a privilege of market. In the beginning of the XVIIth century, when there was a war with Sweden in Lithuania’s teritory, Radviliskis was burnt. There was a starvation after that plague in Radviliskis. And in 1710 there was left no human being in Radviliskis. After some time little by little Radviliskis began to recover. In 1597 there was built the first church in Radviliskis. There was established the first school in Radviliskis at the same year. The church was burnt after seventy years. The fire smelted all the bells but the paints were saved. And in 1870 the church was burnt in the 2nd world war again. In 1997 it was rebuilt. In 1871 there was built the trains’ line through Radviliskis. The town began to grow fast. And Radviliskis became a town of railwaymen. Radviliskis was the central of lithuanians’ culture movement in the year of the press prohibition. Many times Radviliskis was occupied by the foreigners. In the year of 1919 bermontininkai took up this town. buT after some time lithuanian army defeated bermontininkai army and Radviliskis was free again.

There was an active culture life in Radviliskis in the year of independence. There were chorus, drama, sports, literary and other societies. In the year of 1919 there was opened first gymnasium.

There are five schools in Radviliskis now. Two of them are gymnasiums. There is the Culture House, the church, the railway stayion, the bus station and many different shops in Radviliskis.

This town is growing and growing perfectly. I hope that after some time Radviliskis will be a perfect, perspective and famous town.
