HISTORY OF ZAPALA:

In 1792 Zapala appeared for first time in the history with this name for this town. It was written by Esquivel Aldao, in the diary of the expedition on the way to Mendoza, (a state north of Neuquen) to help the Pehuenches natives .100 years later, nearly in 1888, the capitan Pedro Romillo Rober occupied 4okm of fields with cows and started to build Zapala. In 1913 the Railway was working, and with the train came Arturo Trannak's sons, that gave away the railwaylands to build the station and to form the town. The railway line was opened officialy on the 2nd January of 1914.In 1983 the Police Station opened, and the first police chief was Mr Pio Ferreyra. The post office already existed and the 12th of July of 1913 was the official foundation of Zapala.

It's latitude is 38 south and its longitude 70 west. There are small mountains and the soil is not very good for plants. It's dry all the year and it does not rain much. The winter is very cold because we are near the Andes.Sometimes it snows and rains too.The spring is very very windy. The countryside is a desert, there's no vegetation and there are small mountains, Zapala is on top of a plateau. We have a dry ground that isn't good for plants. There's only one lagoon near Zapala, which is part of the National Park Laguna Blanca (White Lagoon)
