Alison Pouliot - Freshwater Scientist

Alison Pouliot has worked as a research scientist since qualifying with a science degree with Honours in Zoology in 1989 (La Trobe University). Her focus has been freshwater research with a particular interest in the use of macro-invertebrates as indicators of river ecosystem health.

Alison has worked in most of Victoria's river catchments including an extensive research project for the Environment Protection Authority in the Victorian Alps looking at the effects of ski resorts on our alpine streams. A project for Melbourne University involved a research project in the Upper Yarra regions assessing the effects of irrigation releases from the Upper Yarra Dam on blackfish populations. Another project involved research into heavy metals in the sediments of Port Phillip Bay.

She has also done extensive research on the floodplains in Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. Over the past two years Alison has worked predominantly as a photographer on a variety of projects including work for the Department of Natural Resources and the Melbourne Ports Authority. She also runs environmental workshops through the Landcare Centre at Creswick and has been an active contributor to the Community Waterwatch Monitoring Program for eight years. Alison has a particular interest in science education and inspiring young people to become interested in the natural world around them.

Linda Newton -Visiting illustrator/artist

Linda Newton has visited us on two occasions to work with the children.  Linda is very interested in the environment which features in her books. Linda showed the children how to draw macro invertebrates and a caricature of a scientist.

Polly Hall

Polly Hall works with the Glenelg-Hopkins Catchment Water Authority. She came to school to show the children how to test the water for salt, acidity, temperature and turbidity.  The students will continue to monitor the water for these variables over the next term. She also discussed storm water drainage and pollution with each grade.
